England vs South Africa, third Test: Alastair Cook at his defiant best to keep hosts’ hopes alive

A lastair Cook owed England first-innings runs. After making his hundred against Pakistan at Old Trafford last year, he had dried up like an actor forgetting his longer speeches, just chipping in with one-liners. But with the series against South Africa poised at one-all, Cook delivered an unbeaten 82 which has kept England in the game.

Test cricket is not cool – most of the time – because the most valuable player is often the opening batsman who turns the tide of a series painstakingly. Cook has piloted England to 171 for four in conditions where the ball has darted all over the shop, and his stubbornness had to be back at its monumental best as he left the ball, or edged it, or was beaten altogether. But on such unglamorous innings – and at times he was even uglier than Dean Elgar – Test victories are based.

Day one in itself made a strong case against four-day Test matches. This may well end in four days, as the first two Tests of this series did – while a Test against West Indies later this summer could easily end in three, especially the inaugural day/nighter at Edgbaston. But because this game was scheduled to last five days, England’s batsmen had to put their heads down, grinding and grafting, instead of throwing the bat as if they had attention deficit disorders; thus their techniques were tested, and their personalities revealed, most notably Cook’s extreme devotion to duty.

I t was much the same as Trent Bridge when South Africa had decided to bat first, a little reluctantly, as the pitch was damp and the ball both swinging and seaming, but it had to be done because the footmarks when dried out would make batting even harder. Cook was England’s Hashim Amla, personifying patience. If he can but reach a century on the second morning – it would be his 31st in Tests – he will be cheered to the echo, not least as the relic of another age when batsmen grew up trying not to get out, rather than trying to get the ball out of the ground.

O f Cook’s five companions, the first had the unhappiest day: Keaton Jennings, caught on the crease again. He has had one bad Test, as he made a hundred in his first, a 50 in his second, also in India, and a valuable 33 at Lord’s after an erroneous decision in his first innings. He may be halfway through his second bad Test, but for the moment he has had just the one at Trent Bridge – yet the bandwagon, or tumbril demanding his head, gathers pace.

Jennings faced nine balls from Philander without scoring a run. After an early lunch, Root was to face six balls from Philander without scoring a run before he too nicked off. The difference was that Jennings showed little intent, when a single to get to the other end should have been the top priority; and the decision about his immediate future has to be based on what is going on inside his head.

N o welcome could have been more reassuring for Tom Westley, not even a band of the Coldstream Guards, than that of Cook, his Essex mentor, the man to bring down the pulse-rate of any debutant. Westley is one of three for England in this game. Not since Princess Margaret was young has London, at the height of the season, seen so many debs, for it was in the Lord’s Test in the first half of June 2014 that England had last fielded so many.

W estley’s personality stood up well under examination. He was not afraid to play to his legside strengths. After he had got off the mark with a couple of fours behind square-leg his confidence, even boldness, was evident when he reached out to Keshav Maharaj and drove him through mid-off. If it was bottom-handed, like all his strokes, it demonstrated positive intent as Jennings had not.

Westley’s righthandedness may have been a contributory factor in South Africa pitching too short for the rest of the morning, once Philander had finished his opening four-over spell. After lunch however one of the first balls to land on Westley’s offstump drew him into a drive – and not an offdrive but an ondrive across the line of an outswinger. On the evidence of this innings, if Westley is to have a lengthy Test career, such as only a small minority of debutants achieve, it is more likely to be down the order – among the swelling band of number sixes England can call on – than number three.

Root tried to counterattack while Cook clung on at the other end, but such was the quality of South Africa’s attack that England’s captain had to throttle down to defence. He nicked off in Philander’s second spell, while the second debutant Dawid Malan was cleaned up by Kagiso Rabada’s yorker. Rain then struck off the last 31 overs, leaving the game in the state that has prevailed in England v South Africa series for more than 60 years: almost perfect equilibrium.

Play Abandoned

A fraid we’ve seen the last of the action today at the Oval, with England content no doubt to avoid losing any further wickets and relying heavily on that stand from Cook throughout the various patches of poor weather.

The former England captain finishes on 82 off 178, with Ben Stokes similarly digging in.

Had Vernon Philander not spent large parts of the day off the field with a stomach bug then South Africa would have inflicted more damage on an undoubted day for the bowlers’, given the cloud cover that’s hung over the Oval since lunchtime.

Special mention has to go to this beauty of a yorker from Rabada on his return from suspension.

WICKET Brilliant catch from de Kock as Root is caught behind for 29

H ere’s to better weather tomorrow, with both sides chasing down the lead in the series in the Oval’s 100th Test.

Umpires and groundsmen having a chat

P ositive signs out on the field, although the covers remain firmly on. Looks like the worst of the weather has cleared for now though.

Cook riding the storm

19:00 is the cut-off time for further play today, so fingers crossed. Cook’s knock of 82 looks even more impressive given conditions.

The rain returns

B ad news. The players are off as the rain returns. Updates as we get them but this could be an issue late in the day.

OVER 59: ENG 171/4 (Cook 82* Stokes 21*)

S tokes takes a single before another neat clip off the pads from Cook brings up the 50 partnership.

It’s raining again, by the way.

And with that, I hand you back over to Ben Coles who will take you through to the close of play.

OVER 58: ENG 168/4 (Cook 80* Stokes 20*)

P hilander has Stokes on the ropes here. He beats him with another beauty that goes right through the batsman’s defence, and all Stokes can do is smile and shake his head in disbelief. One ball after another beats Stokes, who manages an unconvincing inside-edge-of-a-single from the final ball.

OVER 57: ENG 167/4 (Cook 80* Stokes 19*)

T here are few better at pushing a ball short of a length and straying down leg off their hip than Cook, and he does just that to take his first runs since the break in play – four of them, no less.

Then a slower ball from Morkel is overpitched and outside off. Cook punishes him with another boundary. He edges closer to a much-needed century. Needed, that is, for both player and team.

OVER 56: ENG 158/4 (Cook 72* Stokes 18*)

A wide from Philander! The less said about that the better.

He quickly finds his line again, and a ball that nips away from Stokes tempts the batsman into a swing, and he edges up and over the slip cordon for four.

OVER 55: ENG 152/4 (Cook 72* Stokes 13*)

M orkel again. Around the wicket again. Cook, standing strong and digging deep, will rarely be beaten in a game of patience. Morkel tries, tries and tries again to draw Cook into playing at a ball outside off, but can only beat him with a straighter ball that jags away late on and just misses the edge. An intriguing battle, this.

OVER 54: ENG 152/4 (Cook 72* Stokes 13*)

N o surprise to see Philander at the other end. He restarts with figures of two for eight.

He almost has Stokes second ball, after he inside-edges a forward defensive past the stumps and down to third man.

And then Philander finds an all too large gap between Stokes’ bat and pad, but the ball just skids up over the stumps. Good over.

OVER 53: ENG 150/4 (Cook 72* Stokes 11*)

H ere we go then: Morne Morkel restarts proceedings, coming around the wicket at the left handers.

Cloud cover, a bit of moisture in the air, and encouraging movement for Morkel. A short-ish ball keeps low and Stokes bottom edges an attempted hook, before turning one down to fine leg for a single to bring up England’s 150.

Here come the players

T he South Africans are trying to play keepy-uppy with a cricket ball and surprisingly enough aren’t very good at it. Play will resume shortly.

Top Free File Hosts To Store Your Files Online

Top web hostsRecently, the need for space has become immense. Files have become increasingly larger, there are more things to download and so on. Personally, I run out of space on multiple drives all the time. Maybe you are trying to get a file sent to someone, but it s too large for an attachment on your email. Possibly you want to backup some files to download later or multiple times. That is why there are free file hosts that let you store your files online.

I have found numerous different file hosting companies, many of them that supply users with an extremely small amount of space or limited features. Here they are, in no particular order:

Top web hosts1. Filedropper Filedropper is amazing. All you need to do to upload a file is click Upload and select a file.

Many free file hosting sites give users the option to upload file of up to 100-150MB, yet Filedropper allows users to upload an amazing 5GB!

When you finish uploading a file, Filedropper gives you the link and the source code to add to a website, if you like.

Top web hosts2. Fileqube Fileqube is another free file hosting site. It has an awesome site design that definitely shows it s intentions. It is also extremely fast. When you upload a file, a link is provided to download the file, a link to remove the file, and HTML code to add to a website, etc. Unfortunately, Fileqube only allows for uploads of up to only 150MB, yet most certainly one of the best.

Top web hosts3. MyFreeFileHosting MyFreeFileHosting has an interface similar to MediaFire s. It includes the option to send an notification email to someone to tell them of the upload, tags to categorize the file, etc. Of course, after one uploads the file, links are given to allow for download and distribution. The maximum file size allowed is 100MB.

Top web hosts4. Fileden Fileden is one of the most useful file hosting services. Users are allowed to upload files, without an account, of files up to 100MB, yet you are allowed to register an account for free as well and receive unlimited diskspace, unlimited bandwith, the option to create projects, the ability to replace files, file statistics, project statistics, etc.

Top web hosts5. Easyshare Easyshare adds even more features to file hosting. Registering and uploading files occur quickly, with accounts allowing for downloading files multiple times. Unlike other free file hosts though, Easyshare pays users for their uploads. If your upload gets downloaded 10,000 times, you ll apparently receive $20. If you have a personalized toolbar on your website, you can receive money from their uploads through that toolbar and if you refer another person to Easyshare you ll receive 10% of their earnings.

Another neat thing about this site is the upload options. You can upload on the site from your computer, upload using an FTP server, upload using their free software, or use a remote upload from another server. The maximum file size for a free account is 100MB.

Top web hosts6. FileFactory Filefactory is similar to all of the previous file hosts, except it supports the option to send a notification email to a person of an uploaded file. Unfortunately, Filefactory contains a large amount of ads if you do not receive the premium service. Yet, unlike the other file hosts, the maximum file size is 300MB which is a large amount per file in comparison. Similar to Easyshare, users are paid for each download they receive from a certain file.

Top web hosts7. Badongo Badongo is an exceptionally neat file host, and I would most certainly rate it as one of the best. As a unregistered user, you are allowed to upload up to 4.8GB a day and as a free, registered user, 12GB a day. To make it similar to Filedropper, Badongo allows users to upload files of a maximum size of 1GB. When you register with Badongo you even receive an account that stores all of your files of course, but also allows users to create picture albums out of the pictures they store. This brings even more wonderful features to this awesome site.

More features include the option to create an MP3 player on your website by pasting code from your account, the ability to create slideshows from pictures with multiple effects, a file widget tool to place on websites, a desktop application for uploading files quickly, etc.

Now that you have seen some of the top web hosts, tell us what you use to upload and store your files online.

How to use a Hosts file to improve your internet experience, ZDNet, domain hosts.#Domain #hosts

How to use a Hosts file to improve your internet experience

DNS is all fine and dandy, but with a good Hosts file you can speed up your internet experience by eliminating time-wasting links.

Domain hosts

Domain hosts

Suffering from a slow or sluggish home internet connection? Here are eight ways to help improve your network speeds.

Domain Name Servers (DNS) bind the internet together. They match machine-usable IPv4 and IPv6 addresses with human-readable domain names. It’s the internet’s equivalent of the phone book. But, while DNS is utterly essential to the internet, it’s not the only way to connect IP addresses with domain names. You can also use Hosts files to connect mysterious IP addresses with meaningful domain names.

A Hosts file is a file that almost all computers and operating systems can use to map a connection between an IP address and domain names.

This file is an ASCII text file. It contains IP addresses separated by a space and then a domain name. Each address gets its own line. For example, 64.30.228.118 is the IP address for CBS Interactive, ZDNet’s parent company.

To place this in a Host file you’d enter the following line with a text editor, such as Windows’ notepad or Linux’s vi.

You never want to use a word processor to create or edit a Hosts file.

To be a valid Host files entry, you can’t use website designations such as \, /, or http://. If you put a hash tag, #, at the line’s start, you’ve disabled that entry. The Hosts file will ignore it and move to try find the site via DNS. When an entry is valid, your computer will use the address mapping in the Hosts file and not look it up in DNS.

Why bother when your DNS provider automatically looks up addresses for you? Well there are two main reasons.

First — and this is minor — when you go to a site that’s in your Hosts file, it will resolve the address a few milliseconds faster than it would if your computer looked it up on DNS.

Using this to speed up your address resolution is too much trouble. If you’re always visiting the same sites — and most of us are — you’d be better off using the lightweight caching Dnsmasq DNS server. This program automatically saves your DNS queries so that the next time you visit a site, your computer looks it up in the local Dnsmasq cache instead of wasting time going to DNS. This can save as much as 50 percent of your DNS lookup time.

Where Hosts files really shine is by letting you block ads, spyware sites, malware sites, and tracking sites. It does this by blocking your computer from connecting to annoying sites. Specifically, you can list the sites you never want to visit in the Hosts file and give them the loopback address of 127.0.0.1 using IPv4 addressing or ::1 for IPv6 addressing.

What happens then is when a site, email, or what-have-you tries to steer you to a dodgy address, the Hosts file bounces it back and you’re kept from going to the questionable domain.

Now you may ask yourself “how do you know which sites to avoid?” Good question, there are thousands of them.

Fortunately, there are three host files ready to go, which include a large list of known ads servers, tracking cookies sites, and other web locations you’ll want to avoid. These are: How to make the internet not suck (as much), which despite the name is quite good, hpHosts, and MVPS Hosts. There’s also the Hosts File Project, but unlike the others, which are frequently updated, Hosts File Project file hasn’t been updated in over a year.

To use any of these, you must first make a backup of your existing Hosts file. On some operating systems you may not have one. I typically rename my existing file hosts.old.

You then create a file named “hosts”. You never use an extension with the name, such as hosts.txt, you just use “hosts”.

Where you put your new and improved hosts file depends on your operating system and its version. There are several ways to do this. For Windows, MVPS includes an installation routine. With the others, you simply copy and paste their master hosts file to the appropriate destination on your computer.

Before installing a hosts file on a Windows system that’s not part of a domain, you must disable the Windows DNS Client Service. To do this, login with an administrative account and click Start, Run and type “services.msc” and click OK. Double click DNS Client service entry, set its startup type to manual and stop the service.

The security program Windows Defender can also get in the way. It can detect changes to the Hosts file as malware activity. To prevent this from happening, you need to tell Defender to ignore the Hosts file. You do this with the following steps:

1. Open Windows Defender.

2. On the Settings tab, click Excluded files and locations.

4. Locate and then click the Hosts file. Note By default, the Hosts file is in the %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc folder.

6. Exit Windows Defender.

After you’ve done this, you can install the hosts file in one of the following locations:

For NT, Win2K and XP, use “C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” or “C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts”

For Windows 7 and Vista, use “C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” or “%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts”

For Windows 8.x and Windows 10, use “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts”

With Linux or MacOS X, you login as the root user, or use sudo, to move the master hosts file to “/etc/hosts” or on some systems to “/private/etc/hosts”. For example, the shell command

will move the file “hosts” from your home directory to its home in the etc directory.

Once the host file is in place, you’ll see the effects immediately. You don’t need to reboot, or, for that matter, reopen your browsers.

You should see a much cleaner and faster internet experience. If you run into problems, revise the hosts file using a text editor if you can see which address is giving you trouble. For example, the how to make the internet not suck (as much) hosts file blocks all Windows 10 reporting domains by default. To fix this you can either delete the offending entry or you can place a # at the beginning of the line and your machine will ignore it.

If all else fails, you can just delete the new hosts file and replace it with the old one. You did make a backup of it right? Right!?

All this will take you a bit of time and effort, but I think you’ll find that your increase in speed and privacy and drastic drop in ads will make it worth your time. Enjoy.

Tips for Choosing a Web Hosting Service

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a web host is your needs: just like it wouldn’t make sense to use a smaller web host if you’re building a huge website that requires multiple servers, it wouldn’t make sense to pay for a lot of storage and features you’re not going to use if you’re launching a small blog. If you are planning on starting with a small site that will become very large, your best bet is to choose a basic package with unlimited disk space, which will give you enough space for all of the pages you’d like to have and make you to accessible through search engines. When your website expands, you’ll always have the option of switching to a large host later to accommodate your traffic.

The more you know about the different features and publishing tools that are available, the more you can make your website an inviting environment for visitors. Also, try to grasp the more complex technological specs of each web host. Even if it sounds like jargon to you now, it will begin to make more and more sense as start understanding the different features each host offers.

Once you feel grounded in these technological aspects, make sure your website has features in place to find the customers that you’re trying to reach. Almost all web hosts provide means of reaching consumers through free advertisement credits. Shopping carts and multiple email addresses can have a big impact on how professional you look to interested consumers. Checking security features would also be a good idea if you’re trying to set up a small shopping website, as well as CMS availability and integration for each web host. Remember, the more you know, the better website you’ll ultimately have.

Web Hosting Prices

Many web hosting services let you choose from several types of packages, each with a different price and slightly different range of offerings. The prices can range from $4.25/month to over $40/month. These price differentials can be attributed to the different features included within each plan and to the eagerness of some newer hosting companies, such as iPage, to grow their brand by offering extremely low rates. In order to help you stay within your budget, we’ve compared the prices of the best web hosting services of 2012 across all the plans they offer.

Bandwidth and Disk Space

Even if you’re planning a small site, you should look for a minimum of 5 GB of disk space and 250 GB of bandwidth from your web hosting plan. While this may be enough for most websites, it’s important to note that many web hosts such as FatCow are offering an unlimited amount of both at a price that’s comparable to more limited plans. Our side-by-side comparison shows what each host offers to help you decide which plan will best suit your needs.

Ease of Use

Choosing an easy-to-use web host is particularly important if you are new to web hosting. We set up accounts with several web hosting services and used each control panel for a variety of tasks in order to evaluate the ease of use. Since only StartLogic lets you test out their control panel with a free demo, we’ve recorded our findings to help you determine which control panel will be easiest for you to use.

Customer Support

Both web professionals and novice webmasters will likely need assistance from their web host’s customer support staff at some point. Since nearly every hosting company promises impeccable support, we put them to the test to show you how helpful and friendly each support team truly was. We tested the hold times, relevance of the response and politeness of both phone and chat representatives. We also tested the email responses of each web host. Finally, we surveyed the self-help services offered by each web host, in case you prefer to find answers independently.

Standard Web Hosting Features

One thing that tends to complicate the decision of choosing a web host is the large (and often unnecessary) features list that each service provides. Although price, bandwidth and disk space are often the biggest determining factors, it’s also important to evaluate what other features and add-ons each host offers. Our comprehensive features comparison will help you determine which host offers the features you want. Or, if you’re not sure exactly which features your website will need, take a look at our comparison to determine which ones sound helpful and which ones may not be worth the added expense.

Uptime and Page Load Time

Of primary importance to the success of your website is whether or not your visitors will be able to load your site’s pages quickly and to see at a glance what your site is all about. While we found iPage to live up to it’s 100% uptime guarantee, we were surprised to see that HostGator fell short of it’s 99% guarantee. We tested the uptime and page load time of the best hosting services to help you determine which ones are more reliable.

Top Web Hosting – Curious About Web Hosting?

Welcome to Top Web Hosting! Top Web Hosting is a website where you can read in-depth articles about the various kinds of web hosting services. For example, if you are interested in a specific type of web hosting service, for example a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or a dedicated hosting service – it is a good idea to read our articles beforehand. Secondly, check the list of some of the decent hosting service providers, which are hard to find online. It’s available at the top or at the bottom of each dedicated article.

1 in 50 – the Chance of Running into a Non-cPanel Based Web Host!

Why do we say decent web hosting companies, which are hard to find online? There is a contradiction, isn’t there? There is only one, quite simple reason for that. Probably less than 2% of all the web hosting companies in the world run on a hosting platform different from cPanel. Right now there are more than 200,000 active web hosting companies. Less than 2% means that 1 out of 50 hosting companies is non-cPanel based! 1 out of 50! The remaining 98% come down to one and the same thing – a cPanel hosting solution, labeled. differently. Finding a non-cPanel based hosting company has become. a stroke of luck. This is not a hosting variety. Not at all. And Google supports the cPanel-based hosting companies. It’s not that Google takes any side, it’s just that the cPanel hosting providers are so many – it’s natural that the returned search results display cPanel-based hosting providers mostly (if we can use this word – mostly, because it does not actually represent what really happens).

The In-house Built Web Hosting Platforms – Are They Better?

Let’s not be that negative when talking about the one-server based cPanel hosting platform and the companies, which distribute it. cPanel is not such a bad hosting platform, at least as far as small websites are concerned. But when we talk about the variety on today’s web hosting market – we have to face the truth. Thanks to the reseller hosting model introduced by the cPanel platform, there is no variety at the moment. Less than 1 company out of 50 is non-cPanel based. Top Web Hosting is not an anti-cPanel hosting thing. No. We just think it will be a good thing for the entire hosting market if we show how different the in-house built web hosting platforms are. In a very positive way. This is why we will focus entirely on the in-house built shared and cloud hosting platforms, which in many cases might even be a better choice. if you think for a moment.

Web hosting is a service, which involves hosting web content. A web host is actually a web server that is connected to the Internet and has its own IP address, which allows users to access it via the Internet.

Essentially, the genuine cloud hosting platform serves distinct hosting services such as storage space, mail, FTP, databases, DNS, stats, Control Panel, backup, and so on, on independent sets of leading edge web servers.

The shared hosting service – multiple users share the specifications of the same web server. This means that all server resources like CPU, RAM, etc. are divided among the users whose accounts are on that same server.

A Virtual Private Server is a virtual emulation of a server that behaves exactly like a dedicated server and is much more powerful than any shared plan. Each VPS can run a different OS and be rebooted independently.

A dedicated server means that you have a whole machine for your needs and you can utilize all the system resources for your websites’ needs. There are different dedicated server configurations that you can purchase.

A domain name usually consists of two parts – a top-level domain (TLD) and a second-level domain (SLD). If you have domain.com, for example, “.com” is the TLD and “domain” is the SLD. Each country has its own country-code TLD.

The most widely spread marketing type is the hosting reseller service, where the reseller pre-pays for a preferred reseller hosting plan on a monthly basis, split into smaller packages and later sold to the customers at retail prices.

Resell truly genuine cloud hosting accounts. Every single service (Control Panel, email, storage, FTP, databases, stats, DNS, etc.) is being served by a cluster (a host) of web servers dedicated just to that precise service.

Earn money online. Become a domain reseller and sell domain names to end customers, making profit from the difference between the wholesale and the retail price of each domain. 1000’s of domains are registered every day.

Tuesday’s Roundup

Brighton’s Stewart Named Student-Athlete of the Week

DETROIT (AP) – A Great Lakes cleanup program would receive $300 million next year under a spending bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The measure cleared the committee this week and now goes to the full Senate. The program focuses on longstanding Great Lakes environmental problems such as toxic pollution, farm and urban runoff, invasive species and declining wildlife habitat. President Donald Trump called for eliminating the program’s funding, but Congress is resisting.

DETROIT (AP) – A proposed federal lawsuit shows a former scheduler alleged sexual harassment, retaliation and a hostile work environment against U.S. Rep. John Conyers. The woman claimed in the proposed filing from February that the 88-year-old Democrat from Detroit began making sexual advances and inappropriate comments shortly after she was hired. The woman wanted to file a lawsuit under seal to avoid embarrassing Conyers, but a judge denied the request. No further action has been taken since March.

DETROIT (AP) – A Detroit-area doctor at the center of a female genital mutilation case has been released on bond after seven months. Friends of Dr. Jumana Nagarwala pledged to put up $4.5 million if she runs off before trial in 2018. She must wear an electronic tether. Defense attorney Shannon Smith says it will be easier to prepare for trial now that Nagarwala is out of jail. She denies any crime and says she performed a religious custom on girls from her Muslim sect, the Dawoodi Bohra.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel says the school has opened discussions with white supremacist Richard Spencer on his request to speak on campus but says there’s no certainty it will occur. The university posted Schlissel’s comments to the university community online Tuesday night in which he said Spencer’s appearance won’t go forward “if we cannot assure a reasonably safe setting for the event.”
