    1. From the Tools menu, choose “Accounts.”
    2. Select the “Mail” tab.

    5. Check the box next to “My Server Requires Authentication.”
    6. Select the “Advanced” tab.

        1. From the Tools menu, choose “Accounts.”

        3. Select the “Servers” tab.
        4. Check the box next to “My Server Requires Authentication.”
        5. Click “OK.”

        2. Click the mail icon in the lower left corner

        The UTL_SMTP package is designed for sending electronic mails (e-mails) over Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) as specified by RFC821.

        Using UTL_SMTP

        Overview

        The UTL_SMTP protocol consists of a set of commands for an e-mail client to dispatch e-mails to an SMTP server. The UTL_SMTP package provides interfaces to the SMTP commands. For many of the commands, the package provides both a procedural and a functional interface. The functional form returns the reply from the server for processing by the client. The procedural form checks the reply and raises an exception if the reply indicates a transient (400-range reply code) or permanent error (500-range reply code). Otherwise, it discards the reply.

        Note that the original SMTP protocol communicates using 7-bit ASCII. Using UTL_SMTP , all text data (in other words, those in VARCHAR2 ) are converted to US7ASCII before it is sent to the server. Some implementations of SMTP servers that support SMTP extension 8BITMIME [RFC1652] support full 8-bit communication between client and server. The body of the DATA command can be transferred in full 8 bits, but the rest of the SMTP command and response must be in 7 bits. When the target SMTP server supports 8BITMIME extension, users of multibyte databases may convert their non-US7ASCII, multibyte VARCHAR2 data to RAW and use the WRITE_RAW_DATA subprogram to send multibyte data using 8-bit MIME encoding.

        UTL_SMTP provides for SMTP communication as specified in RFC821, but does not provide an API to format the content of the message according to RFC 822 (for example, setting the subject of an electronic mail). You must format the message appropriately. In addition, UTL_SMTP does not have the functionality to implement an SMTP server for an e-mail clients to send e-mails using SMTP.

        Security Model

        This package is an invoker’s rights package. The invoking user must have the connect privilege granted in the access control list assigned to the remote network host to which the user must connect.

The customer initiates a connection to the provider, authenticates, and requests its mail. The roles of client and server then reverse, and normal SMTP proceeds. The provider has an On-Demand Mail Relay process listening for connections on the ODMR port. This process does not need to be a full SMTP server. It does need to be an SMTP client with access to the outgoing mail queues, and as a server implement the EHLO, AUTH, ATRN, and QUIT commands. An MTA normally has a mail client component which processes the outgoing mail queues, attempting to send mail for particular domains, based on time or event (such as new mail being placed in the queue, or receipt of an ETRN command by the SMTP server component). The On-Demand Mail Relay service processes the outgoing queue not on a timer or new mail creation, but on request. The provider side has normal SMTP server responsibilities, including generation of delivery failure notices, etc. as needed.

        SMTP servers need to decide whether an SMTP client is authorized to send mail to remote destinations, or only to destinations that the server itself is responsible for. Usually, SMTP servers accept mail to remote destinations when the client’s IP address is in the “same network” as the server’s IP address.

        SMTP clients outside the SMTP server’s network need a different way to get “same network” privileges. To address this need, Postfix supports SASL authentication (RFC 4954, formerly RFC 2554). With this a remote SMTP client can authenticate to the Postfix SMTP server, and the Postfix SMTP client can authenticate to a remote SMTP server. Once a client is authenticated, a server can give it “same network” privileges.

        Postfix does not implement SASL itself, but instead uses existing implementations as building blocks. This means that some SASL-related configuration files will belong to Postfix, while other configuration files belong to the specific SASL implementation that Postfix will use. This document covers both the Postfix and non-Postfix configuration.

        NOTE: People who go to the trouble of installing Postfix may have the expectation that Postfix is more secure than some other mailers. The Cyrus SASL library contains a lot of code. With this, Postfix becomes as secure as other mail systems that use the Cyrus SASL library. Dovecot provides an alternative that may be worth considering.

        Configuring SASL authentication in the Postfix SMTP server

        As mentioned earlier, SASL is implemented separately from Postfix. For this reason, configuring SASL authentication in the Postfix SMTP server involves two different steps:

        Configuring the SASL implementation to offer a list of mechanisms that are suitable for SASL authentication and, depending on the SASL implementation used, configuring authentication backends that verify the remote SMTP client’s authentication data against the system password file or some other database.

        Configuring the Postfix SMTP server to enable SASL authentication, and to authorize clients to relay mail or to control what envelope sender addresses the client may use.

        Successful authentication in the Postfix SMTP server requires a functional SASL framework. Configuring SASL should therefore always be the first step, before configuring Postfix.

        Currently the Postfix SMTP server supports the Cyrus SASL and Dovecot SASL implementations.

        Current Postfix versions have a plug-in architecture that can support multiple SASL implementations. Before Postfix version 2.3, Postfix had support only for Cyrus SASL.

        Configuring Dovecot SASL

        Dovecot is a POP/IMAP server that has its own configuration to authenticate POP/IMAP clients. When the Postfix SMTP server uses Dovecot SASL, it reuses parts of this configuration. Consult the Dovecot documentation for how to configure and operate the Dovecot authentication server.

        Postfix to Dovecot SASL communication

        Communication between the Postfix SMTP server and Dovecot SASL happens over a UNIX-domain socket or over a TCP socket. We will be using a UNIX-domain socket for better privacy.

        Configuring Cyrus SASL

        The Cyrus SASL framework supports a wide variety of applications (POP, IMAP, SMTP, etc.). Different applications may require different configurations. As a consequence each application may have its own configuration file.

        The first step configuring Cyrus SASL is to determine name and location of a configuration file that describes how the Postfix SMTP server will use the SASL framework.

        Cyrus SASL configuration file name

        The name of the configuration file (default: smtpd.conf ) is configurable. It is a concatenation from a value that the Postfix SMTP server sends to the Cyrus SASL library, and the suffix .conf , added by Cyrus SASL.

        The value sent by Postfix is the name of the server component that will use Cyrus SASL. It defaults to smtpd and is configured with one of the following variables:

        Using UTL_SMTP to send email from your oracle database has changed in Oracle 11g. Or to be more precise accessing the remote network has changed.

        Network Solutions requires customers to enable SMTP Authentication in order to send mail from email programs installed on your computer such as Outlook , Outlook Express, and Eudora .

        Microsoft Outlook Express (PC)

          1. From the Tools menu, choose “Accounts.”
          2. Select the “Mail” tab.
          3. Double-click the Network Solutions’ Mail account (e.g. mail.example.com)
          4. Select the “Servers” tab.
          5. Check the box next to “My Server Requires Authentication.”
          6. Select the “Advanced” tab.
          7. In the Server Port Numbers section, modify “Outgoing mail (SMTP):” to “587”.
          8. Click “OK”

              Outlook 2000 and Outlook 98 (PC)

              Network Solutions’ Outgoing Mail Servers require authentication. To turn this setting on:

              1. From the Tools menu, choose “Accounts.”
              2. Select click the Network Solutions’ Mail account (e.g. mail.example.com) and click “Properties.”
              3. Select the “Servers” tab.
              4. Check the box next to “My Server Requires Authentication.”
              5. Click “OK.”
              1. Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Personalities”.
              2. Right-click on the mail Personality to modify and select “Properties”
              3. Check the box next to “Authentication Allowed”
              4. Click “OK” when you are done.

              Netscape Messenger 7.x or 6.2 (PC)

              Setting up the outgoing (SMTP) server:

              1. Open Netscape
              2. Click the mail icon in the lower left corner
              3. Click EDIT
              4. Click MAIL AND NEWSGROUP settings
              5. For the Outgoing (SMTP) mail server please enter the server name for your ISPs outgoing mail server. Your SMTP host is generally “smtp.” Followed by the domain name of your ISP (ex. smtp.myisp.com).

              Setting up the incoming (POP3) server:

              1. Open Netscape
              2. Click the mail icon in the lower left corner

              Click EDIT

            • Click MAIL AND NEWSGROUPS settings
            • Click on “Outgoing Server (SMTP),” which is located on the left side of the screen.
            • Place a check mark in the box next to “User Name and password.” Enter the User Name (your complete E-mail address).
            • Click the “OK” button.
            • Enter your email address for “User Name”
            • Netscape Messenger 4.x (PC)

              1. Open Netscape Messenger.
              2. Click on the “Edit” menu item.
              3. Then select “Preferences” from the pull-down menu.
              4. Click on “Mail Servers,” which is located on the left side of the screen.
              5. Ensure that your full email address is entered in “Outgoing mail server user name:”
              6. Click “OK”

              Mail for OS X (Mac)

              1. Open the Mail program
              2. From the MAIL menu, choose PREFERENCES
              3. Click the “Accounts” icon.
              4. Click on the appropriate account, and then click the “Edit” button.
              5. Click “Options”
              6. Select “Password” from the “Authentication” setting.
              7. Enter your email address as the username.
              1. Open Eudora
              2. From the EUDORA menu, select Preferences
              3. In the User Name field, enter your full email address
              4. In the SMTP Server field, enter the Name of your outgoing mail server

              Mail server SMTP email send (rate) limit for popular web hosting providers

              If you run a web site and you plan to send out mass emails (for example, a newsletter), it is advisable to send the emails using an authenticated SMTP mail server that matches the nameserver records for your own domain name. This way, your outgoing emails will not trigger anti-spam filters set to identify phishing emails or spammers. For example, if you run a web site at www.my-web-site.com, our advice is to send the emails from a SMTP server name that resolves to the same domain name (like smtp.my-web-site.com).

              Important note: Please do NOT take this information for granted, as your host provider can change its mail server policy without any prior notification. It is always a good idea to contact your host provider and ask about the email send rate, before proceeding with a mass email campaign.

              The following restrictions apply when sending emails from a web site / domain hosted by GoDaddy:

                GoDaddy email send limit for shared web hosting – no more than 250 relays (recipients) per day. You can purchase additional relays, in packs of 50
                GoDaddy email send limit for dedicated servers or dedicated virtual servers – no more than 1000 relays (recipients) per day.
                GoDaddy other SMTP limits – outgoing messages sent via GoDaddy can not exceed 30Mb per email (including attachments)

              RackSpace.com apparently has no email rate limit, however all outgoing messages must be compliant with the RackSpace Acceptable Use Policy.
